What is a Payment Flow?
A Payment flow is the full journey of money in an app or website. It covers everything from selecting a product, entering payment details, authorizations, charging, sending receipts, and handling refunds or disputes.
Payment flows include both:
What the user sees (UI/UX)
What happens behind the scenes (integrations, accounting updates, and systems)
Basically, it’s how money moves and how it should always move correctly.
Why Testing Payment Flows is important
Testing is critical because:
Real money is at stake – errors can lead to revenue loss, double charges, or missing refunds.
User experience matters – smooth flows mean happy users; glitches = abandoned carts and complaints.
Accounting accuracy – orders, taxes, fees, and settlements must match reports and bank deposits.
What to expect from a Payment Flow test 📝
Payment flow tests are usually executed as Test Cases, which provide a structured format and clear steps to identify errors or bugs.
Exploratory testing can also be done, but it might not cover every possible scenario.
Tests may run in either:
QA environment – where test cards (e.g., Stripe test cards) can be used
Live environment – where real payment methods are required
For Live Environment tests:
Instructions will clearly state: what payment type to use, which cards/methods, and what items to purchase
Reimbursement instructions for the sums spent will be provided for each test
Receipts or proof of payment must be kept for reimbursement
Registering for a Payment Flow test 🚀
Each Payment flow test is unique and may require specific devices or payment methods. Registration is required before invitations are sent.
When registering, make sure to provide:
Accurate information about your devices, payment methods, etc.
Correct location and availability (some apps are region-locked or time-limited)
If you qualify, you will receive a test invitation with:
Detailed instructions in the Tester Specifications document
Test Cases for the flow that need to be validated
Any additional documentation or information required
Do’s and Don’ts:
